Breast Self Exam

When to do a breast self exam:

It is recommended to be performed once a month, 7 days after the start of the menstrual period.

Step 1: Inspect

With arms raised, check the breasts for abnormalities such as nipple discharge, dimpling, discoloration, symmetry. Do the same with arms on the hips.

Step 2: Palpate

Lie down on the bed and raise right arm above the head. With the pads of the middle three fingers of the opposite hand, move your fingers in a systematic fashion (circular, up and down, sunburst pattern) while feeling for any lumps or masses. Squeeze nipple to check for discharge. Don’t forget to palpate axillary (armpit area for enlarged lymph nodes). Repeat on the opposite breast.
